Scoring Assessments

Answer Keys

Answer keys are used to score selected response activities or assessment activities for which there is a precise and predetermined correct response that may take the form of a letter, number, words, phrases, or dichotomous choices (e.g., Yes/No, Old/New, Then/Now, etc.).

Answer keys can be:

  • Alphabetical (e.g., one or more correct letters of the alphabet assigned to response options)
  • Numerical (e.g., one or more correct numbers assigned to response options)
  • Spatial (e.g., a visual field marked to designate a correct response)

Assessment items for which answer keys are appropriate are machine-scorable.
